World of Warcraft Quests |wow gold

World of Warcraft Quests |wow gold
After five years, it’s hard to imagine a world without World of Warcraft. Released Nov. 23, 2004, the massively multiplayer online role-playing game has set the standard for the genre. More than 11.5 million players from around the world, from all walks of life, spend hours a day in the world of Azeroth. They embark on epic adventures, battle other players or just hang out. And each of them pays developer Blizzard Entertainment $15 per month for the privilege. Players create characters and develop them over time, forging relationships with other gamers and going on quests to gain experience or loot. Whether they play with strangers, friends or alone, Warcraft’s polished virtual world proves easy to get into and hard to get out of. Though the game’s success has spawned dozens of imitators, not one has posed a serious threat to Blizzard’s dominance. But perhaps the best praise for WoW is that other game designers love to play it. Among its devotees are Tetris creator Alexey Pajitnov and BioShock creative director Ken Levine. “It’s the game I’ve played more than any other,” Levine told Wired.com. “It’s an aesthetic masterpiece…. So much of the world tells a story when you look at it.” Most videogames wear out their welcome after a few months. But Blizzard’s stewardship of its persistent world — filled with orcs and trolls, humans and dwarves — has been so successful that the game shows no signs of slowing, even a half-decade on. Amazingly, World of Warcraft almost didn’t happen. The world’s most popular MMORPG has its roots in real-time strategy games Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness. In 1998, while half of a Blizzard development team was assigned to work on Warcraft III, the other half ended up working on a game that was canceled. A HERDSMAN tending aion power leveling his World of Warcraft Gold flock in a wow gold forest lost a Bull-calf from the fold. After a long wow gold and fruitless search, he made a vow that, if he could only discover the thief wow gold who had stolen the Calf, he would offer a lamb in sacrifice to Hermes, Pan, and the Guardian Deities of the forest. Not long wow gold afterwards, as he ascended a small hillock, he saw at its foot a Lion feeding on the Calf. Terrified at the sight, he lifted his eyes and his hands to heaven, and said: "Just now I vowed to offer a lamb to the Guardian Deities of the wow power leveling forest if I could only find out who had robbed me; but now that I have discovered the thief, I would willingly add a full-grown Bull to the Calf I have lost, if I may only secure my own aion gold escape from him in safety." A FARMER placed nets on his newly-sown plowlands myyqqm1124 and caught a number of World of Warcraft Gold Cranes, which came to pick up his seed. With them he trapped a Stork that had fractured his leg in the net and was earnestly beseeching the Farmer to spare his life. "Pray save me, Master," he said, "and let me go free this once. My broken limb should excite your pity. Besides, I am no Crane, I am a Stork, a bird of excellent character; and see how I love and slave for my father and mother. Look too, at my feathers-- they are not the wow gold least like those of a Crane." The Farmer laughed aloud and said, "It may be all as you say, I only know this: I have taken you with these robbers, the Cranes, and you must die in their company." Birds of a feather flock together. With nothing to do, the team members looked at the games they were playing the most at the time — massively multiplayer online games like Sony’s EverQuest and Electronic Arts’ Ultima Online. At the time, both games topped out at around 200,000 subscribers each, and Blizzard thought it could do better by making a virtual world that was more accessible to newbies. “We felt there was such an opportunity in that genre, and that Warcraft was such a great universe for a game like that,” said Blizzard’s Rob Pardo, the first lead designer on WoW. “We started talking about it, getting excited about it, and we decided to make it.” Pardo aimed for the sky: 1 million subscribers, which would have made his game far and away the most popular MMO of all time. WoW passed that milestone in a matter of months. “We were off by about an order of magnitude,” he said. Pardo, now an executive VP at Blizzard, said he never thought that Warcraft’s world could go on for five years. “When you look historically at what other MMOs have done, by the time you hit the five-year mark, you’ve already hit your peak,” he said. “With World of Warcraft, people are like, ‘I’ve been playing this game for five years, and I still love it.’”

Uh-Oh: World of Warcraft |wow gold

Uh-Oh: World of Warcraft |wow gold
Reach For Your Wallet Dept.: On Wednesday, World of Warcraft began offering two virtual pets — the first in-game items sold for real-world money in Blizzard’s MMO. The Pandaren Monk (above left) and Lil’ KT cost $10 each from the Blizzard online store. When you buy them, they bind to your WoW account, meaning that you can equip them with any character you create. For every purchase of the Pandaren Monk made before December 31, Blizzard will donate $5 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an organization Blizzard has history with. Purchases of Lil’ K.T., a creepy kitty-cat clone of Wrath of the Lich King baddie Kel’Thuzad, won’t benefit any charity, because Lil’ K.T. is evil. Duh. ONE WINTER a Farmer aion leveling found a Snake stiff and cheap wow gold frozen with cold. He had power leveling compassion on it, and buy taking myyqqm1124 it up, placed it in buy wow gold his bosom. The Snake was quickly wow gold revived by the warmth, and resuming its natural instincts, bit its benefactor, inflicting on him a mortal wound. "Oh," cried the Farmer wow gold with his last breath, "I am rightly served for pitying a scoundrel." The greatest kindness will not bind the ungrateful. A YOUNG FAWN once said wow gold to his Father, "You are larger than a dog, and swifter, and more used to running, and you have your wow gold horns as a defense; why, then, O Father! do the hounds frighten you so?" He smiled, and said: "I know full wow power leveling well, my son, that all you say is true. I have the advantages you mention, but when I hear even the bark of a single cheap wow gold dog I feel ready to faint, and fly away as fast as I can." A HEAVY WAGON was being dragged along a country cheap wow gold lane by a team of Oxen. The Axle-trees groaned and creaked terribly; whereupon the Oxen, turning round, thus addressed the wheels: "Hullo there! why do you make buy wow gold so much noise? We bear all the labor, and we, not you, ought to cry out." Those who suffer most cry out the least. It’s not uncommon for MMO players to pay real-world money for in-game items, but this practice is generally accepted in free-to-play online games that make their money off of item sales. And WoW with its monthly fee is definitely not free-to-play. So of course a forum furor erupted about the announcement. While some posters praised Blizzard for making fun items like this easily accessible, others saw panda and cat perched at the top of a very slippery slope. At the very least, we’ll we all be riding that slide with super-cute pets by our side.

Private Ryan Screenwriter |wow gold

Private Ryan Screenwriter |wow gold
Robert Rodat, the screenwriter of Saving Private Ryan, is working on a draft of Sam Raimi’s forthcoming World of Warcraft movie. Raimi told MTV Movies Blog that he has tasked Rodat with the difficult task of writing a faithful, cinematic adaptation of Blizzard’s wildly popular online game. But he wouldn’t confirm which particular Warcraft characters would make the cut. “Our story may or may not be about one of those central characters,” the director said. A MOUNTAIN was once aion power leveling greatly buy agitated. Loud groans cheap wow gold and myyqqm1124 noises level were heard, and crowds aion gold of people came from all parts to see what was the matter. While they were assembled aion gold in anxious expectation of some terrible calamity, out came a Mouse. THE ASS and the Fox, having entered aion power leveling into partnership together for their mutual protection, went out into the forest aion power leveling to hunt. They had not proceeded far when they met a Lion. The Fox, seeing imminent danger, approached wow gold the Lion and promised to contrive for him the capture of the Ass if the Lion would pledge his word cheap aion gold not to harm the Fox. Then, upon assuring the Ass that he would not be injured, the Fox led him to a deep pit and cheap aion gold arranged that he should fall into it. The Lion, seeing that the Ass was secured, immediately clutched the Fox, and attacked the Ass at his leisure. At the very least, Raimi plans to leverage the conflict between the Horde and Alliance for the game. Broad strokes may work best: World of Warcraft takes place in a fairly rich world, one that would be hard to fully explore in a mere two hours. It would be impossible to flesh out every race in one sitting. It could very well be that Raimi and Rodat will narrow their scope for their first outing. “I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true,” Raimi told MTV, suggesting that the movie’s producers would probably “choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game” rather than try to deliver all of Azeroth in one go.

The Rules of the Game |wow gold

The Rules of the Game |wow gold
One of the most heinous and common of all the bad game design crimes is overuse, or just poor use of cut scenes. You know them well... the ten minutes of SGI-rendered plot set-up you have to click past to get to a game. We've all seen them abused in other games, but for a number of reasons, their siren call sucks at the common sense of every game design team, so like a virus or a tithe that we must allow the art department, they perpetuate. Let's use this Rules of the Game to take a step back and figure out what cut scenes are normally used for, what are the common pitfalls to sidestep, and where are they really great. And let's talk about what is the psychology that gets us into this predicament in the first place. Starters: Setting the Stage The single most common, and first use of cut scenes in games is the initial 3-10 minute movie. It's not enough that your player is out to save the world, you want to show what happened to get the world in that state in the first place. This is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, though if you think about it, it really breaks down to four different types The in-betweeners: The next big group of uses for cut scenes is in-between the game rounds. These usually serve two purposes: Giving Rewards and Advancing the Plot. A TORTOISE, lazily level basking aion in the sun, complained leveling to cheap wow gold the sea-birds of her aion power leveling hard fate, that no one would teach her to fly. An Eagle, hovering near, heard her lamentation and demanded what reward she would give him if he aion power leveling would take her aloft and float her in the air. "I will give you," she said, "all the riches aion gold of the Red Sea ." "I will teach you to fly then," said the Eagle; and taking her up in his talons he carried her almost to the clouds suddenly he let aion gold her go, and she fell on a lofty mountain, dashing her shell to pieces . The Tortoise exclaimed in the moment of death: "I have deserved my present fate; for what had I to do with wings and clouds, who wow gold can with difficulty move about on the earth?' If men had all they wished, they would be often ruined. A NUMBER of Flies were myyqqm1124 attracted to a jar of honey aion power level which had been overturned in a housekeeper's room, and placing their feet in it, ate greedily. Their feet, however, became so smeared with the honey that they could not use their wings, nor release themselves, and were suffocated. Just as they were aion power level expiring, they exclaimed, "O foolish creatures that we are, for the sake cheap wow gold of a little pleasure we have destroyed ourselves." Pleasure bought with pains, hurts. Rewards are the most noble purpose of a cut movie. They offer both a moment of respite where the player can shake out his/her cramped hands and a chance for them to get ready to go for the next level. They are the big explosion of the ship, the triumphant cries of his minions, or in some other way a chance for the game to say, "Great job, wanna see something even cooler then you've seen so far?" It takes very little to make the player happy if you are consistent and patient about how much you give and when. The original Missile Command changed it's color palette every ten rounds or so. You'd play the game over and over again, just to get to see what the color change was going to be after the 100th level (it inverted to be black on white, if I remember correctly. Man, that was a retina burner). Advancing the plot is the other main reason for the life of in-between cut movies. This is either to give a clue for later game play or to set up the next scenario. Often these elements are combined. Usually there is a reward for and then a preview of what's to come. Games like C&C will show you a great explosion of your last target, followed by your score and then do an overview of the next round. Final Fantasy does both things and also throws in some conversation that hints at something in the game that you may need to know in order to solve a future puzzle. It also does the last common function of the in-between movies, the transition in space. Games like Riven use this most often as a way to have you travel from one part of the world to the next. It gives the feeling of great space without needintg the character to literally walk great distances in real time. This is one of those areas where game designers reveal if they've paid attention to any of the other mediums that came before. Movies have been teaching us for years that it's not necessary to literally take the characters through every step. Suggestive transitions work great. Seeing Batman and Robin jump in the Batmobile and then arrive in Commissioner Gorden's office works perfectly well to create the whole drive in peoples' minds.

Building Your 3D Resume |wow gold

Building Your 3D Resume |wow gold
What makes a killer 3D resume package? Killer 3D, plain and simple. In the past several years, I have looked at literally thousands of CD-ROMS, videotapes, web sites, slide shows, images, and AVIs - and that's only the 3D stuff. With such fierce competition, you need to stand out. Most of what I get (a full ninety-five percent) has no redeeming qualities. But in most cases it's the submitted material, not the individual's skill, that's of little value. If you work at it, you can make yourself and your work stand out. Below is a list of items that, if addressed, will greatly increase your chances of being considered for and landing a job. These items are not hard and fast rules, rather they are guidelines you should be aware of when conducting your job search. There are tons of books and articles on the subject of resume writing, submission strategies, and all the common aspects of job hunting. You must tend to these aspects of your job search as well. This article will focus more specifically on the content and presentation of your 3D work. Show, Don't Tell I once received a five-page snail mail letter from a 2D artist raving about his own work with absolutely no images. He didn't even sign his name; it was printed (in dot matrix). He had no e-mail address, phone number, or URL. I guess I was supposed to write him back. I didn't waste my time. On the other hand I once received an envelope with both the to and from address hand-lettered. There were several sheets of really talented artwork, and a note that said simply "I am sorry I have no e-mail address. My phone number is 555-5555. Please call collect if you wish to speak with me." I called (not collect) and hired the individual. A MAN and a Lion sell traveled aion leveling together myyqqm1124 through World of Warcraft Gold the wow power leveling forest. They soon began to wow gold boast of their respective superiority to each other in strength and prowess. As they wow gold were disputing, they passed a statue carved in stone, which represented "a Lion wow gold strangled by a Man." The traveler pointed to it and said: "See there! How strong wow gold we are, and how we prevail over even the king of beasts." The wow power leveling Lion replied: "This statue was made by one of you men. If we World of Warcraft Gold Lions knew how to erect statues, you would see the Man placed under the paw of the Lion." One story is good, till another is told. SOME CRANES made their feeding grounds on some plowlands World of Warcraft Gold newly sown with wheat. For a long time the Farmer, brandishing an empty sling, chased them away by the terror he inspired; but when the birds found sell wow gold that the sling was only swung in the air, they ceased to take any notice of it and would not move. The Farmer, on seeing this, charged his sling with stones, and killed a great number. The remaining birds at once forsook his fields, crying to each other, "It is time for us to be off to Liliput: for this man is no longer content to scare us, but begins to show us in earnest what he can do." If words suffice not, blows must follow. Let your work speak for itself. Don't describe it overly much. Listing what applications you used is great, but don't oversell yourself. Focus Since larger companies hire larger teams and more people with specialized jobs, focusing on a strength may help you get a job. Even a small developer will see your best work when it is focused and will be more impressed by it. Don't try to be a Jack-of-all-trades. Define your 3D strength and briefly discuss it. Are you an animator, a model builder (low resolution, high resolution, organic, mechanical), a texture artist, good at lighting, color composition, or what? This specialization will especially be helpful in a larger company. Don't drown your cool model with crappy textures and poor lighting. Maybe a really cool model should be shown in wire frame and/or with a solid color on it. If your specialty is modeling, take out the cheesy music your friend wrote and ax the crappy textures you stole off the net. Show me the model. Don't overload your demo tape, either. Okay, that chrome ball with the reflection map floating over that checkered floor was awesome when you rendered it two years ago, but leave it out of your demo tape. Your demo tape should be short and contain your best stuff. Do not stuff every flying logo you ever created in there. One or two is enough.

inima Cutscene Creation |wow gold

inima Cutscene Creation |wow gold
In the first part of this article, we began our examination of cinematic cutscene creation within game engines (the art form called "Machinima") by looking at tool design, overall project management, and content creation for cutscenes. Now it's time to move on to the meat of cutscene creation, production and post-production, before ultimately considering the specific strengths and weaknesses of real-time 3D as a cinematic medium. Before we discuss the practicalities of your cinematography, though, we should first look at the intent of your scenes -- what is the purpose being served by your masterpieces of cinematic excellence? Uses of In-Game Cutscenes Cutscenes are used within games for a wide variety of purposes, some of them more obvious than others, and more importantly, some of them more appropriately than others. The use to which you intend to put your in-game cinematics will determine many things, among them the budget you will need to assign and the techniques you'll need to use. Thus, it's worth examining the most common implementations of in-game cutscenes, and the appropriateness of each kind of implementation. Dialogue. One of the most common uses of Machinima cutscenes in the recent past has been for in-game dialogue sequences to the player: in any circumstance where another character needs to talk, whether to develop the game's plot or to give a lengthy exposition, many recent games have developed a distinct tendency to shift into full-on cinematics mode for this purpose. This can certainly be a very effective technique for maintaining the mood of the game while delivering information and furthering the plot. However, it's also the most common way in which Machinima within games fails, losing players' interest and devolving into a tedious ordeal to get to the next interactive portion of the game. A FOX one day fell into a deep aion well and power leveling could buy wow gold find no means of myyqqm1124 escape. A Goat, overcome wow gold with thirst, came to the same well, and seeing the Fox, inquired if the water wow gold was good. Concealing his sad plight under a merry guise, the Fox indulged in a lavish praise of the water, saying it was excellent beyond measure, and encouraging him to descend. The Goat, mindful only of his thirst, thoughtlessly wow gold jumped down, but just as he drank, the Fox informed him of the difficulty they were both in and suggested a scheme for their common escape. "If," said he, "you will place your forefeet upon the wall and bend your head, I will run up your back and escape, and will help wow gold you out afterwards." The Goat readily assented and the Fox leaped upon his back. Steadying himself with the Goat's horns, he safely reached the mouth of the wow power leveling well and made off as fast as he could. When the Goat upbraided him for breaking his promise, he turned around and cried out, "You foolish old fellow! If you had as many brains in your head gold wow as you have hairs in your beard, you would never have gone down before you had inspected the way up, nor have exposed yourself to dangers from which you had no means of escape." Look before you leap. TWO MEN were traveling together, when a Bear gold wow suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when buy wow gold the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could. The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger." Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends. For noninteractive dialogue scenes to work well in a game, they must first and foremost be visually interesting. in other words, any purely dialogue-driven scene is doomed to failure from the outset. Always remember that film is a visual medium: if your cutscenes don't add anything beyond what would be gained by reading the text of the dialogue, you'd be better off saving your money and effort and put the text on the screen for players to read at their own pace. In particular, if your game depends heavily on in-game dialogue, you'd do well to employ techniques to convey such dialogue other than noninteractive Machinima: unless your cutscenes are rare or truly exceptional, your players will get bored sitting and watching endless sequences of dialogue that they can't participate in or change (which is, after all, the point of playing a game). Baldur's Gate-style interactive text trees work much better for extensive exposition. They require player interaction, which keeps players from getting bored and keeps them immersed in the game, and the fact that they use a textual rather than visual medium means that players can imagine the conversation's visuals themselves, which means that they'll be of much higher quality and impact than anything you could produce on their screen. Overall, Machinima has many uses within a game, and certainly brief dialogue and conversation scenes are among them. However, it isn't and shouldn't be used as a cheap and cheerful method of delivering hour upon hour of dialogue. Creating convincing, engaging dialogue scenes within Machinima is a difficult and painstaking process, not something that can be whacked out by the hour to provide cheap visual accompaniment to your spoken script.

Video Game Watchdog National |wow gold

Video Game Watchdog National |wow gold
The National Institute on Media and the Family -- the non-profit group behind the sometimes controversial MediaWise Video Game Report Card -- is shutting down after 14 years of operation. The group, a frequent critic of the games industry, said it made the decision to close down in conjunction with Fairview Health Services, NIMF's founding sponsor. The Minneapolis, Minn.-based institute said its board is in talks with local and national non-profits that may continue NIMF's family-oriented research and advocacy initiatives. "Over the past two years the Institute’s board of directors has been in strategic discussions about succession and the Institute’s evolving mission and goals," said Dr. David Walsh, president and founder of NIMF. "The current challenging economic environment accelerated those discussions making this the right time to begin transitioning the programs to other organizations who share our mission and values." NIMF describes itself as a watchdog of the games industry. The group's research is focused on the affect of media on children's health and development. NIMF often found itself at odds with the video game industry, having in the past questioned the effectiveness of the Entertainment Software Rating Board's content rating system and aligning itself with the views of anti-mature game proponents such as Sen. Leland Yee of California and Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut. The organization also had significant input during the course of the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas "hot coffee" fiasco. A HERDSMAN tending aion power leveling his World of Warcraft Gold flock in a wow gold forest lost a Bull-calf from the fold. The Farmer laughed aloud and said, "It may be all as you say, I only know this: I have taken you with these robbers, the Cranes, and you must die in their company." Birds of a feather flock together. The annual Video Game Report Card was often the source of the strain between NIMF and the games industry. For instance, the 2005 report card gave the ESRB an "F" for ratings accuracy; the ESRB quickly shot back, flunking NIMF's research and analysis competence. But in recent years, NIMF has also commended the ESRB and industry trade body the Entertainment Software Association for strides made in keeping mature-themed games out of the hands of children. Most recently, NIMF was focusing its research on video game addiction. "I am so grateful to Fairview and our other funders who enabled us to accomplish so much for children and families over the years," said Walsh, who stated in a blog post that he is not retiring, but will continue on as a commenter on parenting. "But, the work is far from finished and I look forward to transitioning the Institute’s programs to worthy organizations that I am confident will continue to educate parents and caregivers on our rapidly changing digital culture."

Emerge At Gamefest In February |wow gold
Microsoft this week said the latest technology and design details for its upcoming 3D camera solution Project Natal will emerge at Microsoft's annual Gamefest on February 10 and 11, 2010 in Seattle. The Gamefest conference is targeted at video game industry professionals and media interested in learning more are developing games on Microsoft-owned platforms such as Xbox 360. The Project Natal technical track will teach attendees how to approach development for the new control solution. The track will give in-depth advice on "gesture recognition, avatar retargeting, speech recognition, advanced raw stream processing, handling different player environments, and many other topics," according to Gamefest's website. There will also be a Project Natal design track that will focus on " creating new ways to work, building showcase experiences, divining user intent, and designing gestures for UI versus game interactions." Microsoft plans to use the camera as a way to gain traction with audiences intimidated by traditional controllers. The company has yet to announce an official release date. At Gamefest, there will also be tracks related to audio, CPU and system programming, graphics, Xbox Live, QA, XNA and visual arts. The conference will be held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center. Sacramento-based law firm Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff (KCR) filed a class-action suit against Facebook developer Zynga, seeking upwards of $5 million in damages due to allegedly misleading lead generation ads featured in the latter's games. The Cost Per Action (CPA) advertisements in question allow users to earn virtual currency for social games like FarmVille and Mafia Wars by completing surveys, taking quizzes, or signing up for trial offers. Some ads are for legit companies like Netflix and Amazon, but others resulted in unauthorized credit, debit, or mobile charges to consumers for as much as $165. Zynga pledged to keep these misleading offers out of its games, but when an error with ad provider DoubleDing caused the offers to appear again in the developer's recently launched FishVille, Facebook temporarily suspended the game. The developer responded by removing all CPA ads from its titles until it could identify which specific offers were showing up. FishVille was brought back online a few days afterwards. Despite the company's promises, KCR began investigating a possible class action lawsuit last week, pointing to a recently unearthed video shot last Spring in which Zynga CEO admitting he did "every horrible thing in the book ... just to get revenues right away" as proof that the FarmVille studio was aware of the harm its offers caused players. The firm cited the footage in its class-action lawsuit filed with a federal district court in Northern California this week, and claims that Zynga generated "enormous profits through these false and misleading special offers," reeling in anywhere from $33 to $84 million from consumers who responded to the CPA ads displayed with the studio's games. A MOUNTAIN was once aion power leveling greatly buy agitated. Loud groans cheap wow gold and myyqqm1123 noises level were heard, and crowds aion gold of people came from all parts to see what was the matter. KCR also names Facebook as a defendant, arguing that a significant portion of the social network's revenues come from Zynga's games. The law firm estimates that 10 to 20 percent of Facebook's $500 million annual revenues comes from games released by Zynga, the largest application developer on the service (according to monthly active users). "Plaintiff is further informed and believes that Facebook is fully aware of the false and misleading nature of the advertising promulgated through Zynga's applications and that, despite this, it actively engages in promoting Zynga's games to the public," says the filing, which was posted online by Valleywag. The lawsuit comes only three days after Zynga announced it had raised $15.2 million in a third round of funding.

The Death (Of My Interest)|wow gold

The Death (Of My Interest)|wow gold
Demon’s Souls is going to be a hot topic discussion among alternative journalists and academics for some time, perhaps rightly so. The way that game deals with death is well thought out, and actually has an in-world reason behind it. If you die, your (weaker) soul must go out in search of demon souls with which to reclaim your physical body. In Assassin’s Creed, “death” is explained as a de-syncing of the player from his host body in history. In Prey, players must fight their way back from the valley of death, to reclaim their place among the living. Even Silicon Knights’ drawn-out resurrection sequences in Too Human are conceptually relevant. So many games employ outlandish sci-fi or fantasy scenarios that it seems death could be explained away in simple terms -- or, even better, with some entertaining gameplay. Continues and their progeny are usually not a nuisance. They just seem unnecessary, evidence of the early framework around which games have evolved. When a developer intends it, player deaths can be entertaining, they just need to be given weight. If you don’t care if you die, the stakes of play seem rather minor. In Left 4 Dead, you feel like you’re letting your teammates down, so death has weight. But in Gears of War, which I otherwise like very much, death is just an annoying setback, and I have to watch cut scenes again and traipse back across the same shattered landscape just to get killed again by the same stupid Troika. Death can be a good time to provide positive feedback for players, and add tutorial hints. Considering the fact that games are meant to be won, the player is essentially invincible in the grand scheme of things, requiring, again, nothing more than perseverance and the occasional GameFAQs hint. Why not try to create a game that contains similar challenges to standard games, but completely avoids death? A NUMBER of Flies were myyqqm1123 attracted to a jar of honey aion power level which had been overturned in a housekeeper's room, and placing their feet in it, ate greedily. If the end result is the same, and meaningful (or humorous) consequences aren’t built in, why is death even part of the equation? It isn’t really death, after all, it’s really just the proverbial “flesh wound.” These days we have a buffer against death in games anyway: Most first- and third-person shooters have regenerative health, whether it makes sense for the world or not. Once the player’s regenerative health is depleted, they crumple to the ground momentarily, only to have time magically rewound, with players finding themselves transported to a very familiar (usually identically instanced) checkpoint save state from their recent past. The Death (Of My Interest) Of course if you’re not careful, alternate methods of “death” can be even more annoying. Lengthy resurrection sequences (in fact, cut scenes of any kind) will take the player out of the action. Death- or loss-related minigames need to be fun and relevant. Almost any time not playing the game is time waiting to play the game—and that’s generally time wasted. Innovative ways of dealing with player death aren’t just for the wacky indies, or the fringe titles, which is why I deliberately didn’t mention any. High-end games are starting to change the way they deal with what lies beyond, and it seems high time that more developers start to confront their own (in-game) mortality.
